Scorpio Full Moon — Truth, trust, and the fullness of spring

A deep blue sky with soft, wispy white clouds scattered across the frame

Dear Reader,

Today’s Full Moon in Scorpio brings us into the heart of the lunar cycle that began with the New Moon in Aries on April 17th. In its light, we get to see what’s grown over the past two weeks, understand what it’s for, and reorient ourselves to live into its meaning as the cycle continues.

Guided by the Full Moon in Scorpio

The Moon becomes full at 11 degrees of Scorpio today, May 1st, at 7:24 pm CEST, midway through Taurus season, when the Sun illuminates sensual pleasure, embodied presence, and the beauty of the earth. This Scorpio Full Moon reminds us that in order to enjoy the garden, we need to tend the soil; in order to feel good, we need to compost what’s no longer feeding us.

Into the depths with Pluto

The Full Moon comes from a square with Pluto in Aquarius. Any Full Moon in Scorpio brings up deep emotions and asks us to get to the truth of them. Pluto, god of the underworld, pulls us deeper still. And with Pluto barely moving now, the need to face and feel what we’ve been avoiding — and find healing and renewal on the other side — is especially strong.

Pluto will station retrograde at 5 degrees of Aquarius on May 6th. That’s as far as it gets into Aquarius — and the Aquarius house in our birth charts — all year. It will retrograde back to 3 degrees of Aquarius by mid-October. If you have any planets or angles between 3 and 5 degrees of Aquarius, you’re in Pluto’s chamber of transformation.

Jupiter’s helping hand

The Full Moon moves into a trine with Jupiter in Cancer next, offering some relief — a sense that being honest about how we feel, with ourselves and with each other, is not only safe but welcome. Jupiter in this cardinal water sign is here to help us lean into connections — within and without, human and more-than-human — where we feel nourished and held, and allowed to descend.

Since Jupiter is square to Mars and Saturn, we might have to make a little go a long way. But in its sign of exaltation, Jupiter’s healing balm is especially potent. Sometimes all that’s needed to restore our trust in the universe is a smile, or a hug, or a kind expression from someone who loves and cares for us.

Pushing forward with Mars

Mars, the ruler of this Full Moon, is at home in Aries — firing up the Aries house in our birth charts. It squares Jupiter, exact on May 5th, bringing us the confidence to break through whatever Saturn was trying to hold in check through April. We’re being asked to hold two things at once: the desire to charge ahead without looking back, and the need to grow in sensitivity and care. It’s about learning to honor our fire while keeping our hearts open, making sure that we bring the people we love with us.

Rejoicing in the beauty of spring

The Sun reaches 15 degrees of Taurus on May 5th at 1:49 pm CEST, marking the Spring Cross-Quarter — the height of spring, halfway between the Spring Equinox and the Summer Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere. We’re entering the brightest stretch of the year, building toward the peak of light at the June Solstice.

This is the “late morning” or “Gibbous Moon” of the year, when light swells toward fullness and plants are budding, trees are greening, birds are nesting. It's a time to celebrate the abundant beauty of nature and the joy of fully emerging from the dark of winter. I love this time of year, when the air is warming, the lilacs are blooming, and the swifts are returning. I heard them shreeing and went looking — and there they were, wheeling overhead for the first time this morning — happiness!
