Time to find the light in the dark at the Sagittarius New Moon
Dear Reader,
It’s the day of the New Moon, when one lunar cycle closes and another opens. If you haven’t already, I invite you to join me in honoring the old cycle (November 20th – December 20th) with some reflection and journaling.
Looking back over the month, I’m grateful for another Schreibwoche, where I worked on a zine about the solar year, for reviewing the old year with my bestie, and for frosty river walks and moments in the sun.

Guided by the New Moon in Sagittarius
The Sun and Moon met at 28 degrees of Sagittarius this morning, December 20th, at 2:44 am CET for the last New Moon of the year. They’re sitting with Venus in Sagittarius while forming tense aspects to Saturn and Neptune in Pisces, setting a somewhat tender tone for the lunar cycle ahead.
This lunation arrives late in Sagittarius season, one day before the Winter Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere. As the Sun approaches its lowest point in the sky, we’re nearing the longest night of the year, just before the light begins to return. This is Sagittarius's invitation: to hold hope in the dark and trust in what we cannot yet see.
The New Moon closely aligns with the Galactic Center—the heart of the Milky Way, our home galaxy—reminding us of the vastness we belong to. At the same time, the comet 3I Atlas is passing closest to Earth, only the third interstellar object known to fly through our solar system. What it might mean, I don’t know, but it makes me marvel at it all—having traveled so far.
With Venus in Sagittarius near the New Moon, our hearts are longing for connections that uplift us and let us be ourselves. This lunation emphasizes the freedom and fulfillment we're hoping for in the year ahead. There’s a part of us wanting to chart a new course and begin our next adventure.
The Sun, Moon, and Venus all square Saturn and Neptune in Pisces. Both are direct now, completing their final chapters in the sign of the fishes—Neptune will move into Aries at the end of January, and Saturn will follow in mid-February—before conjoining at the first degree of the zodiac later that month.
Saturn and Neptune’s presence at the New Moon serves as a reminder that we’re in between stories. Saturn is like a stop sign, asking us to pause and stay with the parts of us that feel scared, sad, or lonely. Neptune is like a snowstorm, calling us to soften, release the need to know, and remain present with what is being washed away.
Jupiter, the ruler of Sagittarius and guiding deity of this New Moon, is retrograde in Cancer, trining Saturn and Neptune. If we’ve lost hope or let our faith slip away, Jupiter is here to help us find it again. With Jupiter in Cancer, we find the light in one another by treating everyone as kin.
This Solstice New Moon invites us to stand still even as we yearn for change, to stay open and engaged even when we don’t know what’s next, and to let things emerge from within in their own timing. In deepening our faith this way, we tend the ground from which the new story grows.
