Making it all about love at the Libra New Moon

Soft pink and golden clouds scattered across a blue evening sky

Dear Reader,

I’m writing to you on the day of the New Moon, when one cycle is ending and another beginning. If you haven’t already, I invite you to close out the old cycle with me, spanning September 21st to October 21st. I found so much sweetness in poems this month — reading them, sharing them, talking with others about how they move in us — and was reminded just how much I appreciate them and the people who make them.

What’s been here for you?

What are you grateful for?

Guided by the New Moon in Libra

The Moon and the Sun came together at 28 degrees of Libra at 2:26 pm CEST today (convert to your local time here). The New Moon squares Jupiter in Cancer, infusing this lunar cycle with the expansive energy of generosity and gratitude, and calling us to grow in our care for all that we hold dear.

Venus, the presiding deity of the New Moon, is in its home sign of Libra (October 13th to November 6th). With Venus in Libra, co-present with the New Moon, we’re supported to renew our intentions around beauty, art, harmony, justice, and love, and the ways we relate to ourselves and others.

I’ve been re-reading All About Love: New Visions by bell hooks, who was born with the Sun, Mercury, Venus, Saturn, and Neptune all in Libra. In this first of three meditations on love, she starts with the premise that “life [is] not worth living if we [do] not know love.”

Throughout the book, bell emphasizes that loving is an art we can learn and a practice we can cultivate with intention and care. This Libra New Moon offers fertile ground for any seeds we sow now to create a life “where love can flourish”.

The Moon is moving away from a square with Jupiter, with the Moon receiving Jupiter in its sign of Cancer. In her chapter on values, bell calls for “the primacy of a love ethic,” where we “make choices that affirm our interconnectedness with others.” We can work with this New Moon to put love at the center of our lives and come “into greater communion with the world.”

The Moon is moving toward a square, across sign boundaries, with an intensified Pluto in Aquarius, which stationed direct a week earlier. In her book, bell calls us to embrace love as a transformative power that changes us and our world. Love makes us more honest, more courageous, more open, and our world more beautiful and just. How might we strengthen the principle of love in our lives?

Venus is still widely aspecting the outer planet alignment between Neptune in Aries (by opposition), Uranus in Gemini (by trine), and Pluto in Aquarius (also by trine), just before this alignment starts to break up temporarily, when Neptune retrogrades back into Pisces tomorrow. This might be a lunar cycle that calls us into deeper appreciation of the role of art, beauty, and loving relationships as essential for the very real work of visioning a future we hold dear.

When you set an intention, you're planting a seed for what you want to grow in your life.

Who and what are you holding most dear?

What values are guiding your life?

Where are you finding beauty and comfort?

How are you attending to your heart?

How are you attending to other hearts?

Until next time...

I’m looking forward to writing to you again around the time of the Full Supermoon in Taurus on November 5th, which marks the halfway point of the lunar cycle and the closest — and brightest — Full Moon of 2025.

In the meantime, I invite you to take the questions in this newsletter with you — on your walk, into your journal, your dreamtime, or any other creative, contemplative practice that calls to you. I hope they help you weave yourself deeper into the mystery of the Libra New Moon.

Wishing you love and connection wherever you are!
